Using Plickers for Formative Assessment in Language Teaching and Learning

Abstract


This study reports on the use of Plickers for formative assessment in an English language class and discusses the students’ opinion toward this tool. The study employs a case study with qualitative data which involves two classes of the first grade students at a senior high school in Riau. The data were collected through an interview related to the students’ opinion about the use of Plickers. Plickers is a powerful simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices. Moreover, the research findings reveal that the students show positive responses on the use of Plickers for formative assessment in an English language class. They found that Plickers brings out the testing process become easier and enjoyable, engages them to participate on the test, saves their time and paper, and make them more focus on the test items. In short, it can be stated that Plickers is a good technology tools to be used for formative assessment in language class
