Abstract

Web 2.0 technologies such as social networking tools, wikis, and blogs have certainlymaking their way into the field of higher education and research. However, fewstudies have focused on students’ perceptions and their experiences of using webtools. Researchers suggest that students’ perceptions are worthy of attention as theydetermine the success of the use of web tools. This study has been conducted toexplore the perceptions and experiences of master students at University of Warwickmajoring English Language Teaching who used blogs as a part of their module’sassessment, as well as the advantages and limitations of the use of the blog as anassessment and learning tool. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collectedfrom students who were in 2010 to 2017 cohorts and taken the ICT in ELT module. The results indicate that students have positive perceptions of using blogs. Bloggingprovides students with an audience and a sense of community while developing theirskills. The lack of student engagement, time requirements, a focus on writing ability, issues of openness vs plagiarism, lack of motivation to write and the objectivity of theassessment were found as the limitations of blogging as assessment and learning tool.
